In an age where digital connectivity shapes daily life, TikTok is excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with the African Union Commission’s Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD).

Addressing the pressing need for digital safety amidst Africa’s unique challenges. With the concerns rising about the safety of its youngest citizens, TikTok and the African Union Commission (AUC) launch the Africa-wide #SaferTogether Campaign. This initiative underscores their commitment to digital literacy and safety.

#SaferTogether educates and engages youth, parents, teachers, and leaders on digital safety through in-app and on-ground activities. It aligns closely with the AUC’s focus on children’s safety in the digital space and Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy.

This multi-year initiative combines in-app campaigns with on-ground efforts, featuring educational videos, hashtag challenges, and content creator safety endorsements. TikTok and the AUC will also distribute “Digital Safety Toolkits” to aid teachers and guardians in addressing crucial digital safety issues.

Empowering Africa’s Digital Generation

Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, Government Relations & Public Policy Director at TikTok, Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized the strategic nature of this collaboration, Our #SaferTogether partnership with the African Union Commission’s Women, Gender and Youth Directorate reinforces TikTok’s deep commitment to the diverse tapestry of markets across Africa. Through initiatives like our educational workshops, and the development of comprehensive safety toolkits, we are committed to nurturing a digitally safe environment for all.”

Prudence Nonkululeko Ngwenya, Director of the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate African Union, praised the partnership for empowering Africa’s youth and safeguarding their digital futures. She emphasized the importance of safe online experiences and mental well-being for young people.

Through initiatives like the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa and the 1 million Next Level Initiative, the AUC aims to promote increased access to digital platforms while ensuring their safe use.
