Unless you’re a tech-aficionado, learning how to use your newest smartphone’s features and functions can be a little tricky — and more often than not, by the time you’ve gotten the hang of them, it’s time for an upgrade.
That’s why just one month since the launch of the Y9 Prime, here is a list of features and hacks that hopes to give users even more enjoyment out of their new Huawei device.
Huawei launched the Y9 Prime smartphone in South Africa in July 2019. Speaking at the launch of the device, Huawei South Africa’s CTO, Akhram Mohamed said: “the device is positioned to compete squarely against Samsung’s new Galaxy A Series”.
The smartphone, which boasts SA’s first smartphone pop-up camera, runs on Huawei’s EMUI 9.0 OS, it sports 128GBs of internal storage and is paired with 4GB of RAM.

- Screen-recording
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 allows you to record your screen activity and even an entire conversation. To start the screen-recording function, just tap on the shortcut and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Turn apps to private
Using the Huawei Y9 Prime’s security features you are able to lock certain apps you want to keep private by simply using your fingerprint. The first step is to register your fingerprint: Settings -> Security & privacy -> Fingerprint ID. Once you’ve completed this step, head over to your Settings -> Security and privacy -> App Lock and then select which apps you would like to restrict.
- Hands-free navigation
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 supports gesture-based navigation — check out some of the commands below:
- To go to your Home screen – Swipe from the bottom of the screen
- To go to the previous screen – Swipe inward from the left or right edge
- To go to recent tasks – Swipe from the bottom of the screen and pause
- To activate Google Assistant – Swipe up from the bottom corners of the screen
To activate the gesture navigation: Settings -> System -> System navigation and select Gestures.

To take a screenshot with the Huawei Y9 Prime simply swipe three fingers across the screen. Activate this feature by going to: Settings -> Smart assistance -> Motion control -> Three-finger screenshot.
- Twin App
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019’s App Twin feature allows you to move between apps and accounts on one device. The feature works by creating a separate icon for each account logged into.
To initiate this multi-tasking assistant go to Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> App Twin and choose the apps available that you want to clone.
- Real-time network speed calculator
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 allows you to view your network speed in real-time. Once activated, you’re able to see the speed of both your mobile data and WiFi networks. To activate it, go to Settings -> Display -> More display settings and enable Display network speed.
The Y9 Prime 2019 has a recommended retail price of R5,399 and is available in three colours: black, blue, and green.
