Has Fortnite been dethroned?

Fortnite may have lost its title as the most popular battle-royale game in the world to a newcomer.

Apex Legends, a new, free to download battle-royale game by Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, is making waves in the gaming community as the next big thing to play and stream.

In its first week, the game exceeded expectations. It drew 25 million players and had well over 2 million concurrent players at its peak over the first weekend after launch.

50 million players signed up for Apex Legends in its first month, whereas Fortnite took at least four months to reach 40 million. That big of a difference in the first few weeks of a game can lay the groundwork for exponential growth, the kind of growth that could potentially outdo Fortnite’s  200 million strong base of registered players.

Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella also thanked players for helping the game reach over 10 million players in 72 hours.

“We hoped you’d love it as much as us, but never in our wildest dreams could we have expected the outpouring of support and positivity we’ve seen,” said Zampella. “From all of us at Respawn, thank you for giving us and Apex Legends a chance. Thank you for joining us on this journey. This is just the beginning! We have so much more in store for you this year.”
