Apple has a tradition of releasing a holiday advertisement every year, not necessarily to sell any of the Apple products featured in the video but to yank on your heartstrings instead. Last year was all about ” “moving” someone, literally, and the year before saw Frankenstein getting a very special Christmas night.
This year, the commercial was all about “Sharing Your Gifts” this holiday season, in reference to things you created with your own talents and not materialistic things to be bought and given away. The only real product placement is a MacBook that can be seen several times throughout the video.
The advertisement, as shown above, is a fully animated short feature about a girl named Sofia who hides her artwork from the world only for it to get swept away and end up in the hands of everyone out and about in the town. It’s just the kind of thing to get you feeling those warm and fuzzies leading up to Christmas.
There’s also a behind the scenes look at the making of ad. It features a combination of physical sets and computer-generated characters that really showcases how artistic ability and technology can be combined to create wonderful things. The sets are actually quite reminiscent of the sets from a Laika stop-motion film because every tiny detail is painstakingly handcrafted into a tiny version of the real thing. It’s really worth a look just to marvel at the time and effort that went into making the scenes as perfect as possible.
