Takealot.com, South African online retailer, saw a record number of visitors to its site on Black Friday 2018.

The annual Takealot Blue Dot Sale went live at 12:01 on Black Friday morning and generated more than R11,5 million worth of transactions in the first hour alone and surpassed the R87 million GMV mark – the total value of transactions generated last year Black Friday 2017 – by 08:30 AM yesterday.

Tommy Hilfiger For Her perfume was the initial bestseller, followed by DSTV Explora and Pampers nappies. In terms of highest value items sold, four out of the top five best sellers were smart television and gaming consoles (like Xbox One).

Julie-Anne Walsh, Chief Marketing Officer at Takealot.com said that all of the preparation done for the enormous increase in shoppers has paid-off and the site performed well, staying online. Thousands of Blue Dot Sale deals are still available for shoppers to take advantage of over the entire Blue Dot Sale weekend.ā€

Intermittent technical issues with Takealot’s credit card payment provider resulted in some customers experiencing difficulties with credit card transactions. Takealot will be deactivating its credit card payment gateway when necessary until its payment provider has fully restored its service. Customers are encouraged to make use of alternative payment methods including EFT via iPay and Payfast among others.

Takealot’s BlueDot Sale continues throughout the weekend and includes Cyber Monday, and Takealot Tuesday, 27 November (which runs until midnight) with hundreds of new deals added each day.
