According to reports by The Guardian Nigeria, around 280 employees of MTN Nigerian branch were  relieved of their jobs on Friday.

It is believed that this was a voluntary exercise and it was based on an agreement between those that were relieved of their positions and the company’s human resources department.

Reports suggest that the employees who were affected, were mostly permanent employees who had spent five years or more with the South African telecommunications company. MTN introduced a Voluntary Severance Scheme (VSS), which provides a window of one week in April, for persons who have served in MTN for five years and above to take up.

The employees who decide to leave under VSS will be paid the equivalent of their three weeks gross salary for every year they worked with MTN.
