According to a report via BBC.com, former Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been found guilty of murder. The verdict came in after a South African appeals court overturned an earlier manslaughter verdict.
According to the report, Pistorius is currently under house arrest; however, Pistorius will have to return to court to be re-sentenced, for murder. The report revealed that the minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, but judges can apply some discretion.
The report stated that South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the lower court did not correctly apply the rule of dolus eventualis – whether Pistorius knew that a death would be a likely result of his actions.
The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years but judges can apply some discretion. The report revealed that South Africa law does now make provisions for an individual to be placed under house arrest for more than five years. This essentially means that Pistorius will be retunring to prison.
With news of the verdict, Africans reached out to social media platform “Twitter” in order to have their say on the matter.
