Samsung Electronics South Africa has revealed its latest Gear VR device, which is compatible with the Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge.

According to the company, the latest edition of the Gear VR is compatible with even more Samsung smartphones, leveraging each device’s Super AMOLED display to provide the colour, clarity and performance needed for an exciting virtual reality experience.

“Samsung has been at the forefront of delivering mobile excellence and the Gear VR Innovator Edition launched last year was no exception,” says Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung SA. “We see virtual reality as the next computing platform and are thrilled to partner with Oculus on Gear VR, setting the standard for mobile VR and bringing this revolutionary product to consumers.”

The Samsung Gear VR is 22 percent lighter than the previous Gear VR Innovator Edition, including new foam cushioning to make the device more comfortable to wear. The touchpad has also been improved, providing greater control while enjoying the large selection of films, games, 360 degree videos and experiential content. Users can also increase the Gear VR capabilities with the Bluetooth Samsung Smartphone GamePad that connects wirelessly with the Galaxy handset to provide full control of their virtual reality experience.

“Working together with Samsung, we’ve redefined virtual reality and created the best mobile virtual reality available today,” says Brendan Iribe, CEO, Oculus. “People are playing VR games with friends and sharing 360 video experiences and photos around world with the Gear VR – and it’s only the beginning of what’s possible with mobile VR.”

“The world of Gear VR is all about the wow factor and bringing imagination to life. With such extensive content and improved design, we are delivering what our customers want: a fully immersive virtual reality experience,” concludes Fleischer.

The Samsung Gear VR will be available in South Africa at a suggested retail price of R1,999 in Frost White. The device will be available from Samsung Brand Stores from November.
