Ghana’s mobile phone sector is booming. The country’s regulator NCA reported that the country’s mobile phone operators signed up some 400,000 subscribers during February, a sign that the sector is prime for a new round of promotions.
The regulator said that the total number of customers has now reached 31.03 million.
NCA said “MTN Ghana’s subscriptions increased by 173,496 from January’s figure of 13.94 million to end February with 14.11 million. Tigo Ghana had 61,155 new subscriptions and ended February with 4.26 million subscribers. Vodafone Ghana increased its number of customers by 123,465 to end February with 7.3 million.”
Other operators also fared quite well with Airtel Ghana adding 57,612 users to January’s 3.75 million, ending February with 3.81 million. Glo Ghana, however, saw a decrease of 16,816 subscribers from January’s figure of 1.44 million to end February with 1.42 million. Expresso’s subscriptions also declined by 263 from January’s figure of 119,649 to end February with 119,386.
Still despite some of the operators lagging behind, the overall growth is seen as a positive for the sector and something that companies can use to their advantage in order to continue to bolster their offerings and attrack new users and keep customers who already subscribe.
