Rwanda has seen its voice segment of the market stagnant in recent years as more and more users turn toward SMS in order to communicate and hefty pricing of calling outside one’s country has proven expensive.

In an effort to spur growth in its voice calling segment of the market, Airtel Rwanda has unveiled a new call pricing plan for users who want to ring Europe and South Sudan. The plan is part of a new international bundle that customers are able to get on to reduce overall costs of calling friends and family outside Rwanda.

The company said in a statement that the new European options include calls covering France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom.

“The new tariff for the international pack to Europe will see customers call for as low as RWF 30 per minute,” the company said.

Basically, if a user wants to spend RWF 300 daily, the international offer delivers 10 minutes of talk time.

“Additionally customers can now make calls to South Sudan for RWF 69 per minute to all networks, down from the RWF 245 per minute charged earlier,” the company said..

Rwanda has seen its voice segment of the market become stagnant, in recent years, as more and more users turn toward SMS in order to communicate as the hefty pricing of calling outside one’s country has proven to be far too expensive. The goal, Airtel Rwanda hopes, will be to entice more users to stay in touch via voice calls by reducing the rate to something more manageable for users.
