Intel unveils availability of Intel Developer Zone in South Africa

Intel South Africa has revealed the availability of its Intel Developer Zone in South Africa. According to Intel, the Developer Zone is a global programme that has designed to provide software developers and businesses with a single point of access to a variety of tools, communities, and resources.

The Intel Developer Zone provides a platform for developers to engage with peers and develop, market and sell their software.

At the launch event Mohammed Fareed, Software and Service Group Business Development Manager at Intel South Africa stated that: “Intel South Africa recognises the rapid growth and demand of evolving technology, the demand of customer expectation vs. experience and the need for organisations to create best-selling software and apps that not only change lives, but have a lasting impact on communities.”

According to Intel, the Developer Zone makes it easy for the software ecosystem to gain access to Intel expertise, knowledge, and technology in an effort to facilitate the development of innovative software and apps that in turn deliver a higher value to the customers who purchase and use them.

Today’s software ecosystem is full of challenges and opportunities. Technology is powering new user experiences & expectations from touch screens and battery life to data security and cloud accessibility.

The Intel Developer Zone provides the resources to help developers learn and embrace these evolving market shifts while providing the guidance and tools to maximise development efforts across many form factors, platforms, and operating systems.

A business unit within Intel that recognizes that software is tightly coupled with all Intel platforms and processors, SSG is a worldwide provider of software products and services, design resources, technical expertise and consulting,” concludes Fareed.

Showcasing Maker Strengths
Jaco Bezuidenhout and Jaco Van Rensburg, from the University of Pretoria and two of Intel’s promising young Makers, showcased a development project in which they had been working on. According to Fareed, the students were given 10 days in order to build a device that could be used throughout South Africa in multiple ways.

According to Bezuidenhout, other developers tend to use drones in order to capture footage; however, the team decided to develop the E-Car in order to gain perspective from a ground level perspective.

According to the University students, the E-Car can be used in order to survey landscapes, travel through tunnels, and ultimately reach places that individuals may not have traditional access to.

Bezuidenhout ran through the specifications for the E-Car, and revealed that users of the vehicle can view the vehicle’s movements through a Virtual Reality styled headset. Additionally, the E-Car itself has been equipped with a GoPro camera, which can be used to view and record footage.

To add to the specs, the University students had equipped a hard hat with Gyroscopes sensors and Intel technology – which allowed the team to physically tilt and rotate the camera, by utilising physical movement of the head, while wearing the hard hat. Bezuidenhout stated that the project could not have been finalised without the integration and utilisation of Intel’s Edison Board.

Bezuidenhout concluded by stating that: “The E-Car can also be equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities as well as carrier capabilities, such as 3G or 4G connectivity, in order to increase the range of the device.”
