MTN Ghana, with the support of the Ministry of Education, has become the country’s first mobile operator to offer free access to Wikipedia. According to MTN, this forms as part of the Wikimedia Foundation’s global Wikipedia Zero initiative.
According to the company, the service enables MTN customers to access Wikipedia without being charge for data costs. CMO, Rahul De, stated that Wikipedia Zero will provide an opportunity for children, students and professionals to learn more and enhance their knowledge.
The Wikimedia Ghana User Group (WMGUG), a recognised Wikimedia Foundation User Group, said providing access to Wikipedia free will be a great avenue to share the benefits of Wikipedia with the people of Ghana. The introduction of Wikipedia Zero will also enable the many educational institutions in Ghana to tap into the vast information available on Wikipedia for education and research.
