TomTom Telematics, a leading supplier of Telematics Software as a Service is proud to support the Sasol Solar Challenge, which starts on 27th September 2014 in Pretoria and finishes 8 days later in Cape Town.
TomTom Telematics will be tracking the Solar Cars, determining how many kilometres each car travels per day, and based on this, who travelled the furthest, therefore resulting in the winner. The teams will travel through Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Graaf-Reinet, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and Swellendam along the way. It is expected that the top teams will reach a total of 6,000 km, covering at least 700 km a day on average. This year’s event makes it possible for teams to set new records in distance, energy consumption and strategic planning due to the layout of the race course.
‘We, in conjunction with TomTom Africa will be sponsoring the Telematry Trophy, which is a new trophy this year focusing on external, additional data collected and monitored and the use thereof in the strategic planning of the race” said Justin Manson, Business Development Manager at TomTom Telematics.
The winner will be judged on the following:
· Why the team picked the design of their vehicle
· How does the team think the design assisted them in the capturing of solar energy
· How did the team prepare mentally for this race
· How did the team prepare physically for this race
· Coming into the race what did the team think was their competitive edge
· Has this assisted the team in their race strategy
· How did the team plan for cloudy days
· What information did the team look at pre-race to determine their race strategy
· What information does the team think will assist them for the next Sasol Solar Challenge
TomTom Africa is also involved in the overall race as the sole provider of route maps and interactive maps to monitor the race. These crucial elements of the race will ensure that all participants and spectators have the ability to plan their journey for the 8 day expedition from Pretoria to Cape Town as best as possible. Maps will include the entire route, daily stop points and live tracking of the race cars.
