The educational department of the GIZ will also hold two pre-conference workshops on technology innovation hubs and quality assurance in eLearning. The results of these workshops will be fed into the sessions during the conference. The GIZ will present sessions on innovation hubs in Africa, quality assurance in eLearning and mobile learning.

The German Ambassador in Windhoek and the Minister of Environment and Tourism, together with GIZ and their Namibian partners, will be using the conference to officially launch the Namibian online tourism training platform and will also hold a session on this topic. The Tourism Training Namibia web-platform is designed to answer the training needs of the tourism industry in Namibia. IT lets training providers advertise themselves and their courses. The platform offers opportunities for eLearning, introducing and promoting it as means of capacity development in tourism sector in Namibia.

Innovation hubs are shared workspaces where web and mobile programmers can meet to collaborate on new ideas for social innovation, enterprise and community empowerment. The pre-conference workshop on technology innovation hubs in Africa will be held on 29 May 2013. It will examine how these hubs can be run sustainably. The outcomes of the workshop will be presented at the conference.

At the workshop, hub managers will be exchanging their experiences and developing ways to finance the hubs. Together, they will develop a toolbox including ideas for replicable income streams and ways to implement them. The toolbox should answer the question: How can all activities, including community building, tools, services and workshops offered by a hub, pay their way to help build sustainable replicable environments for local empowerment?
