In a bid to increase its user base, Airtel Tanzania has announced a reduction of on-net call rates to TZS 0.10 a second after the initial first two minutes of any call.

The move is likely to be met with praise and could see a boost for its voice calls, which have seen a decline over the past year, the company said.

Airtel Tanzania’s Managing Director Sam Elangalloor said “it has lowered call rates by 70 percent.”

In addition, Airtel Corporate Communications Director Beatrice Singano Mallya said “with effect from January 24, it will cost Airtel’s pre-paid customers less to make on-net calls, adding that there is no need to enrol, as all prepaid customers will automatically enjoy this service on their second minute.”

The new service and tariff reduction should help see a boost in calls on the telecom operators networks and the company hopes it will also spur interest in the operator from consumers not currently using its services.
