Kenya’s ISP group AccessKenya has announced that it will continue to push its metropolitan fibre optic network towards the country’s north coast as it expands across the East African country.
According to the company, the new expansion will deliver optimum Internet services to new areas of the country and should increase overall Internet penetration into the country, as well as boost existing services.
It comes after numerous operators in the country continue to look for ways to boost their services to citizens, and as the Kenyan government hopes that the Internet penetration boost it has received in recent months will help position the country as a prime destination for investment.
“The new cables will cover around 20 kilometers to connect businesses, mainly hotels,” said the company.
With Kenya’s tourism industry currently facing a number of setbacks, the hope is that the new network will help those working in the sector as well as those visiting the country to stay connected.
The firm’s Internet division Managing Director Kris Senanu said the expansion to Mombasa “will allow the company to deliver more support and services in the region.”
He noted that the company “had spent over KES 100 million in expanding its network since the beginning of this year.”
