Africa-wide Foundation Day celebration for SEACOM

SEACOM is celebrating the third anniversary of its commercial launch on 23 July by giving time and support to communities across Africa. The teams of every SEACOM regional office will be getting out of the office for a day to assist and uplift their local communities.

Foundation Day is the day SEACOM commenced commercial operations and began disrupting the African broadband market. Since then, SEACOM has served as a catalyst for the development and growth of the ICT infrastructure and industry on the African continent.


Says Mark Simpson, CEO of SEACOM: “We are excited to mark the third anniversary of our entrance into the market by giving something back to the people in the countries where we have offices. We are looking forward to many more years of helping African telecommunications operators and service providers to bring affordable, high-quality broadband services to business and consumers across the continent.”

The programme’s objective is to create a series of impactful grassroots community development initiatives across SEACOM’s core territories. This will provide a channel for SEACOM employees to directly engage in change orientated social upliftment. Each regional SEACOM Foundation Day initiative will be an empowering experience for all involved.

In South Africa, SEACOM will kick off the SEACOM Solution Quest with Tembisa Secondary High School in celebration of Foundation Day. This is a three month long social collaboration and mentorship programme where SEACOM employees will work with selected Tembisa Secondary scholars to help them create their own interventions to address the largest socio-economic issues affecting their lives.

The SEACOM Mozambique team plans to spend the day with a local school, Centro Juvenil Ingrid Chawner. On the day, the team will donate a computer lab and learning material to the school.

SEACOM Tanzania will donate a computer lab to the students at Buguruni School of the Deaf, Dar es Salaam. Employees will assist develop a basic computer science curriculum and participate in teaching it to the students.

The SEACOM Kenya office and the Swahili Cultural Centre in Mombasa will host an Online Education Content Awareness Day. SEACOM Kenya will provide high speed internet connectivity to the Swahili Cultural Centre and invite neighbouring high school and university students to attend workshops conducted by e-learning experts on how to utilise available online educational content resources in their academic work.

The SEACOM Mauritius office will host a fun day for Ti Rayons Soleil Children’s Centre on SEACOM Foundation Day 2012. SEACOM Mauritius staff will participate in fun activities with the children from the Anoska village, provide them with gift packs, and provide lunch for the children and teachers.

Foundation Day activities form part of SEACOM’s holistic Corporate Social Investment strategy to address critical socio-economic challenges facing African communities. Bottom-up community development is one of the core pillars of SEACOM’s CSI approach. SEACOM is driven to achieve and sustain positive social development of the communities it operates in.
