MTN reduces roaming telephony rates

Must Read

MTN South Africa has significantly reduced the cost of international roaming rates on both voice and data as part of the operator’s commitment to cost-efficient communication services to its customers.

“One of the biggest challenges to consumers when they travel abroad is the cost of roaming services and an overwhelming phone bill when they return back home,” says Serame Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN SA.

“With the increased number of business tourists and holiday makers travelling abroad, MTN has worked tirelessly with Europe and SADC operators to provide affordable and convenient roaming options throughout these regions. We are pleased to be able to offer rates that curb the high costs of communicating abroad therefore alleviating customer worries.”

In 2011, more than five and a half million South Africans departed from the country by air, land and sea. This figure is expected to increase year-on-year which means that the demand for roaming services will continue to soar.

MTN has a strong positioning with respect to roaming in the continent due to its footprint in Africa. MTN customers in Africa are not charged for receiving calls while roaming in the MTN SEA region and they are able to recharge using foreign currency while using their South African MTN SIM card seamlessly. With the reduction of rates, MTN now has a stronger value proposition to its African customers. MTN PayAsYouGo, TopUP subscribers will enjoy reduced call rates while Contract customers will benefit from both call and data rates.

“MTN has always placed heavy focus on understanding its customers’ needs and we continually review our prices and packages to meet those needs,” says Taukobong. “With the newly-reduced roaming prices MTN is empowering customers to roam freely,” he concludes.

Rates are effective from the 17 May 2012
