Sony is due to release a new PSP model, but added that the budget device would be aimed at younger players and teens.
“You will see the audience skew younger. If we are going to take PSP very young – teens and much younger – they are happy to just play the game. If taking wi-fi out is the price to pay, we’re happy to. The €89 price tag is a real barrier that we’ve got under which will help us lift off,” SCEE chief Jim Ryan told MCV.
The new matte model was unveiled at Gamescom in Germany last month, and it is expected to be the same as the previous model in look and feel, but will be without Wi-Fi and possibly sound. It will also be able to play all previously-released PSP games.
The news of a new PSP model came shortly after the announcement that Sony would be launching a new handheld device, the Sony Vita.
