Alumni from Dar es Salaam University are raising money for a new information, communications and technology centre, as Ugandan President Museveni has called on educational institutions to play a more active role in the economic and technological development on the continent.
The president was speaking at the University of Dar es Salaam’s fundraising event and said that change can come from technology developments and the progress that these sectors can have in the educational make-up of East Africa.
Some Shs500-million has been collected to assist in the construction of the multi-purpose building that is estimated to cost $10.3-million.
“It should not be just political liberation, because most African countries are liberated but they are undeveloped. The willingness is there but academicians need to move and the government will support them,” the President, an alumnus of the university, said at State House, Entebbe.
President Museveni auctioned a portrait of former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere for Shs40-million.
