South Africa’s Communication Workers Union (CWU) is deeply concerned about on-going retrenchments in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, arguing that the development would expose many families to poverty.
The disgruntlement by the ICT union comes amid forced retirement at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as well as alleged looting of resources at South Africa Post Office, (SAPO) saying the development was worsening the plight of the communication sector.
The Communication Workers Union spokesman, Matankana Mothapo, told ITNewsAfrica on Tuesday that the latest developments at SABC were sad news to the country’s communication sector.
He said his communication union would convene an emergency meeting on Wednesday in Parktown to deliberate over the retrenchment of the communication workers, among other issues, alleged looting of the country’s post office finances.
“As an affiliate of Cosatu that organise in the Information, Communication and Technology Sector, we invites all media houses to the press conference to discuss the mass retrenchment at SABC, Icasa Local Loop Unbundling and the cooperate financial looting at South African Post Office (SAPO),” said Mothapo.
CWU was also at loggerheads with both Vodacom and Telkom last month over these massive retrenchments before threatening to picket the two offices in demand of better packages as well as safeguarding jobs for the workers.
