The Communication Workers Union is unhappy with retrenchments at the SABC

South Africa’s Communication Workers Union (CWU) has canceled its scheduled press conference aimed at tackling massive job losses at the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, an official told ITNewsafrica this morning.

The Communication Workers Union spokesman, Matankana Mothapo, says the crucial press conference will now take place tomorrow whereby, every ICT challenge would be addressed by senior officials of the union.

“The Communication Workers Union would like to inform all Media houses that the Press Conference is postponed for tomorrow (Thursday). The Press Conference will still be addressed by National Office Bearers (NOB’s) of CWU,” says Mothapo.

The concentrate aim of the conference is to address issues of forced retirement at the public broadcaster – South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as well as alleged looting of resources at South Africa Post Office (SAPO).

Mothapo says the development was worsening the plight of the communication sector.

The communication union would convene an emergency meeting on Thursday in Parktown to deliberate over the retrenchment of the communication workers, among other issues, alleged looting of the country’s post office finances, says Mothapo.

Earlier this year, the Communication Workers Union was embroiled in a similar forced retirement dispute with Vodacom, Telkom and Neotel.
