Vodacom is planning to make broadband accessible for all

South Africa’s leading cellular mobile network, Vodacom has launched a new ICT report, ‘Making broadband accessible for all’ at Wits University, Johannesburg.

The report is aimed at boosting the country’s broadband penetration, increasing consumer welfare, productivity and economic growth.

The report highlights the need to make broadband services more accessible to the country’s population and to improve the mobile service quality, speed and accessibility.

Speaking at the launch, Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer, Pieter Uys says the time has come for mobile customers throughout the country to access broadband services in order to improve communication.

Uys says broadband services can improve the social and economic well being of the country  – including  searching for a job, selling goods, having access to health and educational resources.

“The success story of mobile in emerging markets is already well known but this should soon extend to data services,” says Uys.

Windfred Mfuh, an Associate Fellow at the University of Warwick Business School and an IT expert from Cameron says broadband is about business, social networking and telephony.

“Broadband should be seen as the capability to deliver data and foster innovation, rather than a specific data transfer speed and still less a specific technology,” says Mfuh.
