Qatar Telecom, a leading telecom operator in the Middle East is eager to increase its stake in Tunisia’s telecom operator, Tunisiana.
Qatar Telecom is currently the largest operator in the region and holds about 75% of Tunisiana.
“We have signaled our willingness to increase our stake,” says Abdullah Bin Mohamed.
Qatar Telecoms indicates that the proposed increase would depend on their agreement with the Tunisian government.
The business venture comes on the heels of a key telecom deal signed earlier this year, which saw Qatar Telecom’s majority owned unit, Wataniya Telecom and Princesse Holding of Tunisia purchase Egypt’s Orascom Telecom’s 50% stake in Tunisiana for a reported $1.2 billion.
Telecom analysts and observers indicate that Qatar’s government is likely to approve the deal as competition in the region continues to rise at an alarming rate.
