NETWORKING company, Cisco Systems, predicts that the number of network-connected devices will be more than 15 billion; twice the world’s population by 2015. In the fifth annual Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2010-2015) released recently, the company also says the total amount of global Internet traffic will quadruple by 2015 and reach 966 exabytes per year.

According to Cisco, the traffic growth is driven by an increase in the number of technology devices including mobile phones and tablets, more Internet users and faster broadband speed.

By 2015, the global population’s increased demand for connectivity might lead to nearly 1 billion network connections through wireless devices, 3 billion Internet users and 1 million video viewing minutes.

“The explosive growth in Internet data traffic, especially video, creates an opportunity in the years ahead for optimising and monetising visual, virtual and mobile Internet experiences,” Reshaad Sha, strategy director at Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group.

The projected increase of Internet traffic between 2014 and 2015 alone is 200 exabytes, which is greater than the total amount of Internet Protocol traffic generated globally in 2010.

African Internet growth

Currently about 36.9% of the African Internet traffic is directly from Nigeria.

A recent report from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) indicates that about 43,9 million Nigerians have direct access to the Internet.

The latest statistics confirm Nigeria as the largest Internet population in Africa.
