New statistics published by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) have revealed that in the past two years, broadband Internet services across the world have dropped by 50 percent. The study said that the entry-level broadband services offered have reduced the average cost for customers by 18 percent.
“Consumers and businesses globally are paying on average 18 percent less for entry-level information and communication technology (ICT) services than they were two years ago and more than 50 percent less for high-speed Internet connections,” the ITU said in a statement when publishing the report.
This is welcome news for citizens and businesses that are looking to drive their companies and resources online. The reduction in prices also means that Internet penetration across the world has seen massive increases.
According to the ITU’s data from its 2010 ICT Price Basket, prices for mobile phone services also saw a decrease of some 20 percent in the past two years, while landlines also dropped costs by 7 percent.
Globally, mobile phone subscriptions grew from around four billion to over five billion. “The overall fall in prices for fixed broadband services is mainly due to price decreases in developing countries, where fixed broadband sub-basket dropped by 52 percent, compared to 35 percent in developed countries,” the ITU added.
