A recent report on the state of Kenya’s IT sector revealed that the introduction of 3G services by the country’s telecommunications operators has given support to a fast growing industry. According to RNCOS, a market research consultancy based in India, the moves have given Kenyan customers a better opportunity of developing their mobile services to cater to their needs.

The firm also said that the constant improvements being made in mobile infrastructure and competition has driven the country on the road to success. It is Africa’s third largest mobile phone subscriber base with some 19 million users. Only Nigeria and South Africa are ahead.

In Kenya, Safaricom controls around 77 percent of the market share, followed by Airtel Kenya with 20 percent, Essar Telecom Kenya at 5 percent and Orange Kenya with three percent.

In comments to reporters, Shushmul Maheshwari, RNCOS CEO said that competition and investment is driving the telecom market currently, but he said improvements must be made.

“The technological advancements in Kenya are far behind other countries such as Taiwan, India and China. The services are not satisfactory, thus to maintain the profitability and the subscribers base, the service providers should concentrate more on the quality of services,” he said.

He added that one of the positives in the past year has been the 3G market, which has given Kenyans the opportunity to do more with their mobile phone.
