Weibo
Weibo, the microblogging site owned and operated by Chinese Web portal giant Sina is filling a wide gap left by Twitter after the US based site was blocked by the Chinese Government in June 2009. At the end of October last year, the Weibo registered over 50 million users, a milestone it reached in just 14 months.

“It took us 14 months to reach this important milestone compared to the three years Twitter had taken, not to mention we have numerous competitors in the China market,” CEO Charles Chao told investors after reporting third-quarter results. “It speaks for the strength of our miniblog platform and our strong execution ability.”

Since last year, the number of registered users has grown to 80 million and this number is expected to double in a year.

The company will focus on monetizing the site in 2011.

In 2008, China leapt over the U.S. as the country with the most Internet users. It’s continued climbing. As of June, China had 420 million people online, according to government statistics. Since the end of 2009, the country added 36 million users, almost equal to California’s population.
