THE Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) will lead discourse at one of two sessions at the fourth IT Edge Convergence Forum to be held in Lagos later this month under the auspices of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) with support from Glo-1.

The forum, which is organized by IT Edge Intelligence Unit (IT-IU), is structured to look at the enhanced opportunities for the convergence of media, regulation, content and digitalisation under the framework of how to drive convergence through connectivity infrastructures with the theme:

ATCON, the umbrella body for all licensed telecom operators in Nigeria, will be examining the future of Internet Protocol networks in a converged environment hinged on a presentation entitled, IP Networks and the Future of Convergence: An ATCON Perspective. According to the head of the Intelligence Unit, Segun Oruame, there is streamlined to look at the potentials of submarine connectivity infrastructures as well as co-competition feeds from communication satellite backbones.

He said: “From a regulatory perspective, it is designed to afford the NCC an additional platform to articulate its regulatory standpoint on the rising issues concerning broadband connectivity, mono ownership of connectivity infrastructures and last mile services and the risk of anti-tort by mega Telcos, as well as other issues relating to convergence in the industry.”

The forum offers a window for stakeholders from the broadcast and telecoms, banking and insurance, education and entertainment, and the wider private and public sectors to articulate shared ideas on advancing the industry for the mutual benefits of all players in the field.

“Convergence is radically improving the stakes for communication, collaboration, media distribution, delivery of news, sports and entertainment contents and reconfiguring the business of book publishing, retail banking, e-commerce, advertising, e-and m-payments, dating and socialising like never before within the framework of the digital age. All these can only be possible when connectivity infrastructures are available,” Oruame said.

The event will draw participants from within and outside the West African sub-region including telecom operators, Internet Service Providers, application and software providers, players in the financial sector, broadcast and online media industry, entertainment and education sectors among others.

According to IT Edge Intelligence Unit, the event would incorporate the yearly IT Edge West Africa Top 50 Technology Business Enterprise Ranking ceremony, a yearly computation of the top companies with extensive influence and marketplace relevance within the sub-region.
