Four South African celebs appointed LG ambassadors

Adding to their already established green footing, LG Electronics South Africa yesterday announced the addition of another four high-profile South African icons, to act as official Green Ambassadors in the company’s commitment towards environmental conservation.

Hosted at the glamorous Saxon hotel, the event held last night introduced the new LG Green Ambassadors, set to join LG’s current Green representatives, Matthew and Sonia Booth in espousing the virtues of a greener world for us and future generations to come.

Springbok Rugby Captain John Smit, Protea Cricket all-rounder, JP Duminy, businesswoman and entrepreneur, Basetsana Kumalo and SA Fashion Designer and Trend Analyst, Dion Chang are the latest additions to LG’s “Life’s Good when it’s Green” campaign, communicating the message that LG’s eco-friendly products are better for consumers as well as better for the environment.

“The LG ‘Life’s Good when it’s Green’ campaign kicked off in 2010 with the appointment of Matthew and Sonia Booth acting as LG’s first Green Ambassadors. Its full worth and significance, however, will only now transpire as the announcement of our remaining four Green Ambassadors is set to truly entrench our message of green technology and environmental conservation,” explains Dr. Michelle Potgieter, Marketing Director, LG Electronics South Africa.

“Their combined qualities of style, technical skill, and leadership are synonymous with LG’s brand pillars of stylish design, smart technology and, reliability.” As an added windfall, our chosen heroes also represent three of South Africa’s most supported sports namely; soccer, rugby and cricket, rendering our alliance superbly green partnership, aimed at promoting local unity and a greater appreciation of, and for, all things green.”

The LG “Life’s Good when it’s Green” programme aims to instil environmentally sound practices across the entire product life cycle, and divides the approach into two focus areas: manufacturing and product.

Based on this, LG Electronics aims to reduce green house gases from manufacturing by 150 000 and product by 30 000 tons, respectively, by 2020 Reduction of green house gases emitted during the product’s life cycle (raw material, distribution, product stage, disposal, etc) will be carried out in stages.

“At LG, we have a social responsibility towards the environment and are actively fulfilling our obligation to reduce green house gas emissions worldwide, by designing and manufacturing products that are energy and water efficient.”

“This commitment commences with the design of LG products, by designing products that are most eco-friendly and continues all the way through to production. This means that LG effectively eliminates the use of hazardous substances during every stage of the production process while ensuring that energy consumption and green processes are always adhered to.”

“LG focuses firstly on environmental effect. By designing and producing the most eco-friendly products, we continually look for ways to reduce the impact. The commitment and support of our Green Ambassadors has given us the impetus to influence, as we now have credible vehicles to communicate the strides we have made in the consumer electronics market to our customers and industry at large,” concludes Dr. Potgieter.
