The latest development was achieved in December last year and the rise is expected to continue.
Vodacom’s international subscribers reached 13.4 million during the same period, but the official could not immediately reveal the figures before last year.
In an interview with ITNewsAfrica.com, Vodacom Group’s Executive Head of Corporate Communications, Richard Boorman, said the South African customer base was up 2.5% on the prior year and down 3.9% compared to the previous quarter.
“The main reason for the decline was the effect of the implementation of Regulation of Interception of Communication Act (RICA)”, said Boorman.
He added that one of the four pillars of Vodacom’s strategy is to expand in sub-Saharan Africa. He said Vodacom Group had not disclosed any specific acquisition targets at the moment, particularly in the sub-Sahara Africa, as is the case with close rivals MTN.
“The key is to find markets where there are good growth opportunities and that aren’t saturated with current suppliers”, concluded Boorman.
