Skype and Nokia today announced the release of Skype for Nokia smartphones, based on the Symbian platform.
“With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move”, said Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype.
Nokia smartphone users will have acces to Skype directly from their mobiles, using either a WiFi or mobile data connection such as GPRS, EDGE or 3G. The application can be downloaded for free from Nokia’s Ovi Store, the company’s online shop for mobile content.
According to Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones at Nokia, the company sees around 1.5 million downloads per day on its online Ovi Store.
Skype will run for now on the latest Symbian version for Nokia, named Symbian ^1, and will be introduced soon to other Symbian mobile devices, such as the Sony-Ericsson.
