Designer notebook hits South Africa

Must Read

Designer Karim Rashid has teamed up with Asus to create the Eee PC 1008P notebook, now available in South Africa from Ingram Micro.

The laptop is a customized version of its Eee PC 1008HA, complete with industrial designer Karim Rashid’s cover art and feel.

According to Tyrone Gruner, Asus product manager at Ingram Micro South Africa, the laptop comes with an Atom N450 processor, 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 display, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and Windows 7 Starter Edition and resists up to 5 hours of battery life.

“Visually it’s far closer to the Eee PC 1008HA and Rashid’s design prowess goes further than simply making this notebook stand out in a crowd. The material the notebook’s crocodile like lid (what Asus calls Digi-Wave) is coated in is both fingerprint and scratch resistant, while the one-inch thick design of the notebook means the various expansion ports on the machine are hidden away behind little doors, neatening up the overall design and serving the practical purposes of keeping them dust-free”, explains Gruner.

Karim Rashid’s art works have been featured in magazine and books including Time, Financial Times, NY Times, Esquire and GQ. The designer won over 300 awards, has more than 3000 designs in production and its work spans over 35 countries.

Ingram Micro South Africa is a joint venture between Ingram Micro Europe, a division of Ingram Micro Inc and MB Technologies, established to market and distribute components and other technology products to VARs, system builders, integrators and manufacturers throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
