Bahrain Telecommunication (Batelco) is considering entering the North African market and has expressed interest in a stake in Algeria’s Orascom Telecom unit, Djezzy.

According to local newspapers, Batelco will consider biding for Djeezy if it finds suitable partners.

“We prefer to work with partners”, said Batelco official Peter Kaliaropoulos, the Manama-based Al Wagt daily reports.

He added that Djezzy’s selling price is higher than the market price and requires capital that isn’t currently available to Batelco.

Djeezy is a unit of Egypt’s Orascom Telecom Holding.

Batelco has operations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan and India.
