Tanzania gives subscribers deadline to register SIM cards

TANZANIA has given mobile phone subscribers until the end of the year to register their SIM cards.
This comes a few weeks after South Africa began registering its subscribers in a move aimed at reducing misuse by fraudsters.

Professor John Nkhoma, director general of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority told media the move was aimed at protecting users from fraudsters.
“We have to start from somewhere. We have to implement this system and companies and individuals should meet the December 31 deadline,” he told media.
To register, subscribers have to visit their service provider with certain documentation such as identity cards and proof of residence, among others.
Nkhoma said subscribers that do not register by the set date will be removed from the network.
