Telkom intends to honour South Africa’s bst Maths, Science and Technology educators through the introduction of the Telkom Educator of the Year Awards.
The launch of the awards will take place at Johannesburg’s Westcliff Hotel, and will be managed by the Telkom Foundation, the company’s charitable and social responsibility arm.
Says Prelene Schmidt, acting CEO of the Telkom Foundation: “The technological innovations that define our age have brought about a profound change in the skill requirements of the global workforce. The knowledge workers of tomorrow, of which the global economy will demand ever-increasing numbers, will have to demonstrate heightened intellectual prowess – a equirement that will be difficult to meet without a solid foundation in Maths, Science and Technology.”
She adds: “As an ICT Company, it is obvious why Telkom’s focus is on Maths, Science and Technology education. But more importantly, we are also acutely aware that the skills reservoir in our country is quite shallow in these fields. If we are to grow our economy, every effort needs to be ploughed into bolstering our Maths, Science and Technology proficiency at all levels in our country.”
A total of seven educators will walk away with the prestigious awards, with six each winning laptops and ZAR15 000.
“In addition, there will be a seventh category, our retired Educator of the Year, who will receive a laptop and R20 000.00 in cash,” says Schmidt. Many qualified educators had to come out of retirement due to the scarcity of certified teachers in the above-mentioned subject matters. These educators have passionately dedicated many years to their profession and it is fitting to recognize and reward them for this,” explains Schmidt.
Those who take the trouble to nominate deserving educators also stand a chance to win. “Laptops will be awarded to seven lucky people who vote for one of the eventual winners,” says Schmidt. Entry forms for the Telkom Educator of the Year Awards are available from all Telkom Direct stores or on www.educatoroftheyear.co.za.
Nominations and voting will commence on 28 May 2009 and will end on 28 June 2009, one month later. The awards ceremony is scheduled for the 22nd of August 2009.
She is the best teacher in seshego at the school named tsutsumetsa primary school
I agree with the statemdnt we as a group of learners heard this educator awards and the only person we could think of was mem mothema teaching us at tsutsumet$a primary. She is the right teacher to win this award. It will also mean a lot if you can just give her this oportunity

Mr. A. Slaughter has been my Mathematics teacher for the past three years. Never has Maths been so enjoyable and captivating to even the laziest of student. His achievements span further than any ordinary Mathematics teacher and I truly believe that Mr. Slaughter be awarded Educator of the Year to not only honor him but to give him the recognition he deserves. A true mathematician, a true South African…
I would like to nominate Jabulani Xulu. Mr Xulu has this amaizing passion of teaching maths and science such that he started weekends maths classes to help youth get more and more understanding. He is one of the younges, energetic, and dedicated teachers i know.
KZN rural schools lack resources especially when comes to science equipment and stuff, but these road blocks never let people like Mr Xulu give up. The guy is passinate, hardworking, and he love his job. My matric maths and science classes use to start at 7am everyday while i was doing my matric.
Early february Mr Xulu organised a meeting between parents and learners/students to discuss the importance of Maths and Science and his proposed plans and methods to help motivate learners to take these subjects. He organised I, and my former classmates to come help motivate so that learners could see proof and the importance of maths and science.
He did all these for the love of his job. He paid for all expenses incurred so learners can have bright future! This man teaches some students during holidays, weekends, etc.
The dude did not just teach me Maths, but he gave me a key to the bright future. HE DEFINATELY DESERVE THIS RECOGNITION. WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE HIM!

Mr J. Nkone of Hulwazi Secondary School, situated in Daveyton, Benoni, JHB.
He was my Technical Drawing educator from 1999 to 2002. He, as the educator was the best at doing what he was paid for but, we loved him more for the father, friend, counsellor, that he was. He was the only one who helped us get to where we are today.
I personally honour him for his unselfish love for being an educator. To a great deal he was able to give the best education that anyone could get from a township school.
I, today am a Site Design Engineer working for a Global Telecommunications company & I still acknowledge the ones who helped me get where I am today.
Bra Jan,
Thank you…
Maths started to make sense to me when I met this man at Nyanga high school, in winter school. He is so passionate about maths and he always wants his students to understand and fall inlove with maths. Right now I’m doing Bsc, but I still remember everything he thought me in high school level. I admire Mr Rholinyathi’s work.
Mrs ML Makgale of Lerome intermediate school in Rustenburg is a best teacher. She tought me maths and science and she is very exccellent when coming to teaching. She is somebody who is understanderble and very determine to he work. She loves teaching with all her heart, cause she is willing to sacrifice her time just for teaching some body. She is also involved in community,by teaching old people and those who did not have privillage of studying. We count many people this day who are successfull because she worked without any payment going to her account.from Kagiso Makgale she deserve this, because of passion and sacriffice she have towards her work.THANK U VERY MUCH

Why does Transoranje – Skool vir Dowes in Gauteng not
appear in your lists of schools that can nominate their educators?

MR S PIllay -Port Shepstone Secondary School. He is one of the the best educators.
Comment on Miss Rabbaney, Emmarentia Primary School, Maths & Science,Gauteng,Active. An outstanding educator in both Maths & Science that excels in every aspect of teaching. She is committed, dedicated, innovative, fun and truly makes learning a pleasure. I have seen her grown in her career over the past five years and she just recently received the post of Senior H.O.D at this School. She is an asset to our children and the community at large. She has a wealth of knowledge to share with other educators. Her technique and implementation of lessons are truly highly commendable. She takes the utmost of pride in her work , her classroom and her presentation of lessons both in and out of the classroom. She has shown excellent management and leadership qualities. She is truly one of the best educators at this time.
Gill Haggis frpm Aucklandpark Preparatory School is a most remarkable teacher.
She teaches grade 1 and sets a firm foundation for any other teacher to build on. Her creative and enthusiastic ways to discipline, encourage, motivate and teach, makes her the best teacher I have ever come accross. If it weren’t for the fact that my children would loose her as a teacher, I would nominate that she becomes the minister of education as her ways of teaching are remarkable and show definite results.
I would like to nominate Mr Henk Myburgh. He is my Natural Science teacher at Gert Maritz Primary School in Pietermaritzburg. (I am in Grade 6). The other teachers teach from the book, but he adds examples from real life. This makes it so interesting and help us to remember the work. His classes are always interesting and fun. He is also very fair and we can feel that he really loves children. He’s my hero.
What process will Telkom be following to shortlist nominees? How do we make sure that we actually end up with a Educator of the Year?
If I want to be involved in the process – do I put forward a educator and then organise that as many people as possible vote for this educator and if I succeed in this – my educator wins? Do I understand the process correctly?
If this is the extent of the process, then I would strongly suggest that Telkom revisit the competition rules. If i understand things incorrectly – please advise.
Mam bapela the current educator of the year 2009 was so grateful after winning that she tremendously improved her teaching skills and she is willing to help the up and coming MATHS EDUCATORS to improve thier Maths teaching skills. Thank you TELKOM for recognising this excellent educator.
