South African online shoppers kick started their festive season shopping in a big way last week. On September 18, between 6h00 and 24h00, over R27 million was spent on 55 000 airline tickets as part of a ‘garage sale’ by kulula air.
Taking advantage of travel specials offered from October 2008 to January 2009, nearly 145,000 visitors went to kulula-air.com and viewed over one million Web pages on the day. With annual turnover of more than R1,6 billion, the website is the country’s largest online retailer.
“It was a shopping frenzy, without all the pushing and yelling you may find in a traditional store,” said Carl Scholtz, head of IT for kulula. “Our online booking engine performed magnificently, processing up to 150 flight quotes every second during the peak shopping hour.”
Supported by a team of 20 developers, kulula’s IT team recently introduced a new look and structure for kulula.com to reflect the company’s broadened online offering that now includes end-to-end travel packages and a variety of mobile phone and data packages.
