The World Economic Forum has ranked Tanzania in the 11th position in Africa for information and communication technology strength (ICT).

The Citizen newspaper on Thursday quoted the report as saying that the forum’s Global Information Technology Report 2006-2007 Networked Readiness Index had also ranked Tanzania as in the 91st position worldwide.
The index compared the status quo of the indexed countries and regions with their strengths and weaknesses two years ago.

But the forum warned that sub-Saharan African countries had almost all dropped from their previous rankings except for Nigeria.

Tanzania ranked 84th in the 2005-2006 index and was 83rd in the 2004-2005 index.

The World Economic Forum report cited such factors as hindering the ICT improvement and development in the sub-Saharan region as lack of extensive and efficient infrastructure, over-regulated business environment and low education standards.

The forum’s report has taken into account ICT status quo of 122 countries and regions from around the world. Now the sixth edition since its inauguration, the forum’s report is becoming the world’s most respected ICT assessment.
