Malawi’s G-Mobile signs up with Telkom SA
Malawi’s third largest mobile network, Globally Advanced Integrated Networks Limited (G-Mobile) has contracted Telkom Management Services to operate and manage its network.
Executive Director, Neverl Kambasha, said that his company’s main investor Beryl Telecoms has entered into a management services contract with South Africa’s leading service provider, Telkom.
Kambasha also said that G-Mobile would officially launch in a few months to consolidate its position in the mobile cellular market of this southern African nation.
This development comes weeks after Beryl Telecom signed a multi-million dollar supply contract with the Chinese firm ZTE for network equipment, which is already being manufactured in China.
“We want to build and operate a world class network that will not only provide quality services, but also impart skills to the local Malawians involved and Telkom is willing to provide the needed skills development and knowledge transfer.
“We acknowledge that G-Mobile had been under pressure to meet its rollout deadline, but with the Supply Contract with ZTE already signed and the management contract being concluded, the network rollout would be expedited”, said Kambasha.
He added: “Malawi’s mobile tariffs are among the highest in this part of Africa due to the dominance of only two players in the market, therefore we intend to galvanize competition and reinvigorate the market by aggressive roll out of products throughout the country and by offering better services at more affordable rates to the people”.
