Broadband tower causes panic in Johannesburg

TECHNOLOGY is generally viewed in positive light in the advancement of people’s lives, but not so to some residents of the affluent suburb of Sandton.

Residents there are complaining about problems which they claim are associated with a broadband wireless tower in the area, which they say is affecting the health of their children who normally complain of headaches, rash and nausea.

However, iBurst, the service provider to the broadband wireless tower, dismissed the claims as lacking substance and basis.

The company said in statement tests done by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection revealed that the tower in question was producing 10 000 times less radiation than the levels deemed harmful to health.

In a related development, a South African daily newspaper, The Star, on Tuesday reported that a 21-month old baby from Sandton vomited three times a day for two days and suffered an inexplicable rash, allegedly owing to the tower.

iBurst chief executive officer, Jannie van Zyl, could not immediately be reached for comment on the extent of concern over the installation of the broadband tower.
