HP South Africa launches innovative recycling programme
Hewlett Packard (HP) has introduced a business-to-business recycling and take-back programme in an effort to promote environmentally friendly practices in the IT industry.
Through the programme, businesses are encouraged to dispose of their electronic waste, which will be collected and recycled by HP.
HP South Africa managing director, Oliver Fortuin, said the company would use HP-approved hardware logistics and recycling vendors that were compliant with local legislation and HP’s global recycling and environmental standards. All vendors would be audited by HP on an ongoing basis as part of a vendor performance program.
He said services by HP South Africa would include collection and recycling of single loads in excess of 250 kg in the greater Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban areas.
“Additional chargeable services are available to business customers such as logistics for smaller loads, secure data destruction, equipment removal and packaging. If requested, Secure Data Destruction is carried out in accordance with strict HP global standards,” said Fortuin.
He said HP was intent on helping business customers seeking to dispose of and recycle end-of-life IT hardware.
“As one of the major IT hardware suppliers in South Africa, we believe it is our duty to offer this valuable service to customers, efficient and cost-effective, and environmental responsible manner,” says Fortuin.
He said the South African programme represents the 52nd country where HP has introduced recycling services as part of its ongoing commitment towards environmental responsibility and the conscientious handling of E-waste.
A pilot project in Cape Town is already underway, and has created new employment by equipping people with the training and equipment to dismantle electronic waste safely and responsibly.

I am the Programme Manager of the Mogalakwena i-community which was created originally by HP (then called the HP i-community in 2002)
I have read with interest a good number of your reports in particular your original business strategy & plan and the closure report.
The effort; both in terms of financial and human resources by your company was truley significant. Unfortunately (with one exception Jan Smit) the subsequent program managers appeared not to have continued HP’s truley innovative approach to breaching the ‘digital divide’.
I have been in this position for just under 2 months so I am still trying to find my feet. I would like to give an update on the current situation which quite frankly is not good news, however I hope to rectify the situation over the next 6 months or so to at least meet some of the original objectives.
I am in the process of initiating a low volume PC recyling project. I would like to speak to the person responsible for your recyling programme with a view for possible collaboration.

who can i contact so that i can recycle the HP HDDs ,i am based i Pretoria Brooklyn
I am from the Music Education Department at the University of Pretoria. We launched a highly successfull project, called the South African Music Technology Project from 3-10 July 2009 for 50 teachers from underpriviledged schools in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. HP (Japan) donated 50 refurbished DELL laptops for this project which we loaded with various Music Software, donated by Sibelius/Avid in America.
I am organizing a small closure function at UP on Friday 2 October for all the students and stakeholders that were involved in the project. Seeing that the laptop donation was made by HP, I would very much like to have any representative from HP South Africa at this function to represent your company. The function starts at 13:00 in the foyer of the Musaion with a drink and snacks, followed by a small feedback report on the project.

i need to know what it takes for someone to become a member of recyclers or I.T products disposal in his country.I live in Gaborone,Botswana
i just want to ask of small businesses using hp products
which at the end of the day may need to be get rid of.how does it go with the recycling project.as sending i have kept 9 hp printers which i want to get rid of and i dont have enough space to reach to keep them to reach the 250Kg.im around Johannesburg in Benoni.
I am based in South Africa and have pontatial of collecting old computers for recycling. Who can I get in contact with regarding this matter.

I am a home user using Hp Color LaserJet 1600. I’ve just purchased a new black cartridge and would like to know how to dispose of the old one.
