Vodacom to switch off lights for Earth Hour
VODACOM, South Africa’s leading cellular network, will join millions around the world by switching off its lights to show support for World Wide Fund (WWF) Earth Hour 2009.
Vodacom will also switch off its electronic billboards at Buccleuch interchange and O.R Tambo International Airport. In addition, the company’s Vodacom sign on the iconic Ponte Tower in central Johannesburg, will be in darkness for one hour.
It said the lights at over fifteen of Vodacom’s offices throughout the country, including Vodacom’s head office at the Vodacom Campus in Midrand, will be switched off for one hour (20:30 to 21:30) as part of the company’s commitment to help protect the environment.
Says Dot Field, Chief Communications Officer, Vodacom Group: “Climate change is one of the most serious problems facing our world today. Earth Hour is an important symbolic gesture in respect of a crucial aspect of our planet’s future well being, and Vodacom is proud to be joining hands in this initiative. We encourage our stakeholders and other South African companies individuals to join us in showing support for Earth Hour 2009.”
All Vodacom staff have also been invited to participate by switching off their lights at home, during this hour and will be sent sms reminders in this regard.
What a load of crock! The vodacom sign was flashing brightly against an otherwise pretty dim JHB skyline. Big ups to Vodacom for screwing up a truly great moment of earth unity.
