SA cybernet operators low charges as competition increases
THE cutthroat competition that exists in the cybernet café industry in South Africa has seen operators reduce their prices significantly to attract customers.
This follows a sharp increase in the number of people using the internet for different purposes.
A survey showed that as a result of the surge, some internet café operators have now reduced charges to an average of R1 for about 25 minutes. Before, most operators charged R1 for 12 minutes.
“We want to attract as many customers as we can. Following the reduction of our charges, we have registered a massive growth in subscriber base,” said an operator at a Hillbrow cybernet café.
Chris Odia, a cybercafé owner in Yeoville, also said business was now picking up.
“At these rates, the internet has become affordable, which is no wonder there has been an increase in the number of schoolchildren visiting my café to do research,” he said.
Internet usage in South Africa last December hit an all-time high in seven years.
According to a study titled, “Internet Access in South Africa 2008″, it was revealed that internet users have increased to 4, 4 million in a country of more than 40 million people.—ITNewsAfrica.
This is a good development. I just hope that this trend will continue.
