Artists in South Africa have accused local mobile operators Vodacom and MTN of violating copyright laws. According to a report in The City Press, popular musicians DJ Cleo and Flavour N’abania have requested for sales data from MTN, Content Connect Africa (CCA) and Vodacom to establish whether or not their royalties have been withheld.
According to the Composers Authors and Publishers Association (Capasso), attempts to license and collect royalties from MTN and CCA have been met with constant rate disputes and an unwillingness to enter into licence agreements. Both mobile operators have denied any wrongdoing and described the allegations as “ludicrous” and devoid of truth.
Capasso said in a statement this week: “Failed negotiations and rate disputes have been the order of the day for over five years; this while the mobile giant continues to sell hit singles.”
