Ericsson hosts workshop for Sierra Leonean officials

Industry stakeholders and government officials in Sierra Leone have benefitted from an ICT workshop organized by Ericsson and its partners- Airtel, the National Telecommunications Commission (NATCOM), and the Ministry of Information and Communications. The workshop, which was held on Tuesday, hosted 60 service providers, government officials, regulators and the media in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

According to a report in the Sierra Express, The Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Theo Nicol, praised Ericsson and Airtel who he said had worked very hard to make the workshop a success.

He stressed that the government believed strongly in communications, noting that the workshop was extremely important because of the critical role ICT plays in the civil service.

In his remarks, Mr. Jonathan Kahn of Ericsson Kenya said the workshop was organized by his organization in a bid to promote Ericsson’s vision of a networked society and to ensure that every Sierra Leonean benefits from ICT.

Furthermore, he explained that his company intends to open up new connectivity. He also pointed out that Ericsson would open up new opportunities for ICT education in the country.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of Airtel Sierra Leone, Mr. RVS Bhullah, stated that the programme aimed to deepen the understanding of the participants while championing the roll out and application of communications infrastructure to support sustainable economic and societal development.

He explained that one notable development of their operations is the introduction of the mobile broadband with Internet connectivity of up to 3.75 gigabytes in all major towns and cities in the country, with mining and other companies in the remote areas now relying on their Internet services.
