South Africans can be more demanding than their overseas counterparts when it comes to email communication and are a lot more aware of emerging trends, such as cloud-based email hosting and support, and a more flexible/ mobile-driven workplace environment. In fact – South Africans love email so much, they are prepared to work around any and all corporate policies to get to it.
This is the view of management at Gauteng-based Mimecast South Africa. Operating locally since 2002, the company has established a name for itself as a provider of services and solutions that are designed to “remove the pain and complexity of email”
The Unified Email Management (UEM) company delivers SaaS-based enterprise email management including security, continuity and archiving.
Data remains the most prized asset within any business and Mimecast management believes the company is ideally positioned, with the necessary expertise and experience, to help clients tap into the power of efficient email and leverage off growing trends.
One of the more significant trends today is the emergence of the cloud as a credible, secure platform to manage email offsite.
This platform is considered a solid mechanism through which to ensure the secure archiving of email, reliable retrieval and disaster recovery.
“Our value proposition is the combination of all aspects of email management. Clients are dealing with one vendor that unifies all areas of email control and management in the cloud,” explains Christelle Hicklin, Customer Experience Manager at Mimecast.
According to Hicklin the way the information age is evolving, the exponential growth of data and the impact this has on overhead and cost structures is a key driver behind the UEM space.
Other emerging trends, such as tools to assist in the management of unstructured data, is something the company is aware of and will continue to keep a close eye on.
As part of its strategy to inform the market of email trends and best practices, Mimecast has brought out a Generation Gmail Report. Last year the Report highlighted the results of an internationally commissioned study investigating attitudes to work email use conducted in South Africa, the UK, the US and Canada.
82% of respondents said that email is their preferred method of communication, versus only 66% of the total sample.
According to Hicklin what makes the South African results so interesting are the extremes.
“An incredible 97% of South Africans consider it essential that their email is problem-free. This understanding of how much South African corporate users love email explains some of the other, no less extraordinary, but a lot more worrying results,” says Hicklin.
According to the report 81% of South African email users send work emails from their personal email accounts with one in five doing it on a regular basis. While almost 80% realize this exposes their companies to risk, close to half feel it’s still an acceptable practice.
Mimecast management believes that the changes in workplace practices, the call from employees for flexibility and the consumerisation of IT will continue to impact on their industry.
