Today the term big data draws a lot of attention. For many years, businesses have been making decisions based on transactional data stored in relational databases. Beyond that critical data, however, is a potential treasure trove of non-traditional, less structured data: blogs, social media, email, sensors, and photographsthat can be mined for useful information.

Big Data gives a business the ability to spot market trends and capitalize on business prospects better than ever before. The affordability of both storage and compute power has made it feasible to collect this data – which would have been discarded only a few years ago.

Many companies as a result are looking to include non-traditional yet potentially highly valuable data in their business intelligence planning.

Taking place at the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton on 30 May 2012, the Big Data theme will explore how non-traditional data can be integrated into an organization’s data trove and be analysed and used for the benefit of business.

The bi-monthly ITNewsAfrica Innovation Dinner (www.innovationdinner.co.za) series is the premier gathering for IT executives across all industries in Africa. Designed for Africa’s ICT professionals, entrepreneurs and senior business people, the event is a great opportunity for networking, to acquire information and develop strategic planning.

Past sponsors of the event include IBM, Hewlett-Packard, MTN, RICOH, Research In Motion (RIM), and Adobe.

The most recent Innovation Dinner, which took place in Nigeria for the first time, was hailed as a major success, with Internet Solutions West Africa CEO Steve Herridge commenting “What a great event. Well done to the IT News Africa team. I enjoyed the interaction with peers and the great brain power.”
