Cell C’s ‘99 Cents For Real’ reaches 2-million

When South African mobile operators Vodacom and Cell C launched similar 99c products earlier this month, it sparked a bit of a mobile price war. But Cell C recently confirmed that they have never had such a great response to a product before.

“We are currently only just able to match orders for the product which have exceeded 2-million in the first weeks. It is one of the fastest growing products we have ever launched,” said Cell C CEO, Alan Knott-Craig.

But the new product, which allows Cell C customers to call any subscriber on any network at anytime of the day for only 99c (with per-second billing), is not just for attracting new customer – many exciting subscribers have already switched over.

“In the first hour, thousands of customers had already migrated to the new product,” Knott-Craig confirmed.

Currently Cell C and Vodacom are the only operators in South Africa who introduced their 99c offering, with MTN and 8ta mum on any future plans.
