AITEC East Africa attracts 100 German delegates

The 2nd AITEC East Africa ICT Summit, an event that brings the world to Kenya in a discussion of current issues in ICT, will be held on2-3 November 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The theme of the conference is: “We have the bandwidth. Now what?” reflecting a provocative focus on content and capacity-building in three specialised ICT areas: Cloud Computing, Data Security and Mobile Applications.

A delegation of about 100 German ICT business leaders and investors led by Stefan Kaiferer, State Secretary- Federal Ministry of Economic and Technology, has confirmed attendance at the event.

Afrika Verein, an association of German companies doing business in Africa, will host two training workshops on data security.

In addition, special features of the Summit include a Mobile Applications Innovation Pavilion, where young, emerging software developers will be given free space to showcase their products.

The AITEC East Africa Summit will bring together ICT experts from four continents and will assemble thought-leaders including high-powered delegations from Germany, Sri Lanka, Sweden and South Africa. Other countries with representation at the event include Senegal, Egypt, India and the USA.

About 60 local and international experts have confirmed participation as speakers, panellists and workshop leaders, includingDr Baharul Islam, Chairman and CEO for the Development Gateway South Asia, India, who will be speaking on harnessing ICT for small and medium-size enterprises, Dr Warigia Bowman, Assistant Professor at the American University, Egypt who will present her findings on the research she has done on Kenya’s Digital Villages and Pasha Centres and John Jenkins, Chief Executive: Business Connexion Services, South Africa, who will speak on “Beyond outsourcing”.

Mouhamet Diop, Chairman & CEO of Kheweul.com and CEO of NEXT in Senegal, will make a presentation challenging Africa’s ICT enterprises to broaden their horizons: “ICT and business in Africa: What is the next big thing?”

The Summit will also feature Kenya’s Kamal Budhabhatti, CEO of Craft Silicon, who will make a presentation on the local software development space  and his company’s experience in bringing Elma, their latest software innovation, to the market. He will be joined by another two of Kenya’s software pioneers, John Waibochi, CEO of Virtual City and Erik Hershman, Director of Operations & Strategy at Ushahidi and Director of iHub, to share their experience with the region’s budding software developers.

AITEC East Africa ICT Summit will tackle relevant debates on cloud computing; its impacts, challenges and opportunities. To lead this discussion will be professionals in Global Cloud Computing, including René Raeber, Technical Solutions Architect at Cisco, Switzerland and Henk van Wilsum, Executive Consultant, IBM East Africa.

Dr Anil Sahai, an AITEC associate from Silicon Valley, USA, will lead a detailed training workshop on cloud computing implementation. Harry Hare, Executive Director, African e-Development Resource Centre and Publisher of CIO Magazine will make a presentation entitled:  “Confessions of a cloud computing addict.”
