Telkom has issued a statement revealing plans to extend its sponsorship contract for the South African charity football tournament, the Telkom Charity Cup.

This was revealed by Telkom South Africa executive Pinky Moholi over the weekend. Telkom has sponsored the popular one-day event since 2000.

Last month, R4.6 million was distributed to 68 charities out of the proceeds from last year’s edition. Meanwhile, Moholi also gave an overview and presentation regarding their preparedness for the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Moholi said: “Not only are we on the doorstep of the Confederations Cup and the 2009 PSL season, but we are at a crucial moment in the history of South Africa’s most-loved sport. The eyes of the world are on us.”

She said Telkom, a national supporter of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is providing the fixed line technology that will make it possible to show all the football action in high definition, as well as optical fiber technology to interconnect all World Cup venues.
